We Are Nature
We often forget that we are nature. Nature is not something separate from us. So when we say that we have lost our connection with nature, we’ve lost our connection to ourselves. (Andy Goldsworthy)
We need to re-establish the connections we have lost to nature, and consequently, to our inner selves. In recent centuries we have commoditised nature and exploited this “uncivilised” world for short-term needs. In the pursuit of progress we have only succeeded in damaging our planet and threatening our common future.
We now live in an ‘age of crises’. The report released this week by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warns that “warming of the climate system is unequivocal” and that “human influence on the climate system is clear”. Despite the continuing efforts of some governments, businesses and individuals to debate the causes and consequences of climate change, it is time to accept that we have entered a ‘post-cautionary’ world and must prepare to face the effects of climate change on people and planet. We need to redesign ourselves with the capabilities for building resilience to withstand and adapt to unpredictable crises.
Ākāśa Innovation points a way forward in navigating through these uncertain times. We accompany young pioneers and organisations on a journey of rediscovering and reviving their connections with nature. We explore paths of radical transformation that are inspired by lessons learned in nature over 3.8 billion years. Our holistic approach is guided by principles represented in the harmonious balance of the natural elements of earth, water, sun and air. Learning to see our connection to nature anew is the first step towards building a better world and hope for sustainable futures.
